Seabird Safety: OCAq takes preventative measures against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is taking measures to protect its resident birds against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). HPAI is an avian disease that is transmitted between birds through their saliva, mucous, and feces. The global spread of HPAI is driven in part by migratory waterfowl, which are especially susceptible to the disease. HPAI has been detected in the Pacific Flyway, a major north-south flight path for migratory birds that extends from Alaska to South America, and is quickly becoming prevalent in western Oregon.

As HPAI can be carried by humans via clothing, in order to keep its birds safe the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s Seabird Aviary was closed until 3/20/23. We thank our guests for their patience and understanding; this measure helps ensure the health and safety of vulnerable species.

More information on HPAI can be found via the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
