Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

A Mission, A Commitment

The Oregon Coast Aquarium’s mission is to create unique and engaging experiences that connect people with the Oregon coast and inspire ocean conservation. Conservation of the ocean is critical to the future of this planet. People of all perspectives, backgrounds, and cultures must work together to achieve this vital goal. Connecting people to the Oregon Coast and inspiring ocean conservation requires meeting the needs of and engaging with diverse communities, and providing equitable access to safe, authentic opportunities with the Aquarium and coastal ecosystems.
As an organization dedicated to conservation, the Oregon Coast Aquarium understands that biodiversity resilience is directly tied to the resilience of our human diversity. We support our staff, partners, and communities to achieve our mission by ensuring diversity, equity, inclusion, access and justice in all elements of our work. Together, we can take meaningful steps to conserve nature for all to cherish for generations to come.

Commitments in Action

The Aquarium’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, access and justice includes professional development opportunities that help our staff recognize and address biases, challenges, and barriers to access that allows us to better include and serve communities. The Aquarium also establishes and maintains partnerships with organizations that hold similar values, broadening the scope and strength of our efforts.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is now a certified Sensory Inclusive facility, registered with KultureCity. With trained staff, sensory bags, and before-you-visit resources to help, our goal is to make it so any guest can have a comfortable visit to the Aquarium, regardless of any sensory sensitivities.

By partnering with local public libraries, we have expanded our capacity to provide families with more accessible opportunities to visit the Aquarium. Using their library card, adult checkout cardholders can reserve a pass and get free admission to the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Currently we partner with Driftwood Public Library, Newport Public Library, Siletz Public Library, and Tillamook Public Library for this program. Don’t see your local library here? Check back later as our roster continues to grow, or contact your local library to see what similar programs they may offer.

Karle’s Aquarium Fund for Foster Families is a program that allows foster families in Lincoln, Linn, Lane, Marion, Polk, and Benton counties to receive up to six free admissions per family during a single visit to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This program was established with the goal of making experiences like the Aquarium more accessible for children in Oregon’s foster care program.

In order to provide more accessible opportunities for our community members, every Sunday Lincoln County residents can visit the Aquarium at a reduced admissions fee of $5 per person. Requires proof of Lincoln County residency.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium understands that every individual has different needs. We encourage those with specific needs to contact us, so that we may coordinate special accommodations to provide our guests with accessible, welcoming, and meaningful Aquarium experiences.
