Spirit Mountain Community Fund Grants $25,000 to the Oregon Coast Aquarium

November 06, 2013

Newport, Oregon—The Spirit Mountain Community Fund granted a $25,000 gift to sustain and improve the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s facility, exhibits and education programs.

Carrie Lewis, CEO/President of the Aquarium, said, “We are grateful to the Spirit Mountain Community Fund for their generous support of the Aquarium. The staff of the Aquarium also appreciate the Fund’s flexibility in allowing the Aquarium to dedicate this gift to where it is needed most.”

“We see our support of the Aquarium as an investment in educating the public about the marine resources our tribe currently and historically depends on,” said Julia Willis, Grants Coordinator for the Spirit Mountain Community Fund.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a nonprofit, public aquatic and marine science exhibition facility that offers educational programs and exhibits that are home to 259 unique species that are mostly native to the ocean off of Oregon’s coast. The Aquarium seeks to provide a balanced, informed view of the wealth and fragility of coastal resources and promote environmental awareness, conservation and stewardship.

Admissions and other earned revenue only cover part of the Aquarium’s annual expenditures. Membership support, grants and contributions from individuals or their estates fill that gap and make special projects, like the recently remodeled Seal and Sea Lion Exhibit possible.

The Spirit Mountain Community Fund’s focus is to improve the quality of life in Northwest Oregon through community investments that provide lasting benefits consistent with the Tribe's culture and values.

As the philanthropic arm of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, the fund has awarded more than $60 million in grants to nonprofits throughout Oregon. For information, visit www.thecommunityfund.com/.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is open every day 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.aquarium.org or call (541) 867-3474.
