Oregon Coast Aquarium Invites Teens to Explore Marine Science

September 16, 2013

Newport, Oregon—Do you know a teen that is a fanatic about fishes, aspires to perfect pinniped training, or positively adores puffins? This year can be one to remember for them through behind the scenes experiences with the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s Youth & Community and Job Shadow Programs.

Teens can walk a mile in the rubber boots of the Aquarium’s husbandry staff on the third Wednesday of every month in the Job Shadow Program. The program is designed to provide high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to explore Aquarium-related careers in the marine mammal, bird, or fish and invertebrates departments for a few hours and ask keepers career-related questions. Applications for this program are accepted throughout the year, but are filled on a first-scheduled basis.

High school students seeking an in-depth experience may sign up for a four month Youth & Community Program. Program participants enjoy behind the scenes experiences at the Aquarium and make their own mark on the Oregon coast community by working as a team to develop an education or conservation related project.

Additional benefits for participating teens include educational work experience, professional references, discounts in the Aquarium gift shop and café along with complimentary passes for every 50 hours of service. Also after completing 50 hours of service youth volunteers are eligible to receive an Aquarium membership.

Young people interested in joining the Youth & Community Program are encouraged to apply by September 20. Once an application is received, a short interview will be scheduled to discuss program opportunities.

Youth interested in exploring the Aquarium through the Job Shadow or Youth & Community Programs may pick up an application at the Aquarium, on the web at www.aquarium.org, by calling (541) 867-3474 x5312, or emailing volunteer@aquarium.org for more information.
