Youth Volunteers Start a Summer of Science at the Oregon Coast Aquarium

June 20, 2013

Newport, Oregon— School is out and for 25 teens this marks the beginning of a summer submersed in marine science. As youth volunteers for the Oregon Coast Aquarium, they will enhance visitor experiences by sharing what they are learning as interpretive naturalists.

Teresa Mealy, the Aquarium’s Youth Program Coordinator said, “The Youth Program provides a great experience for students to learn about marine careers and the ecology of the Oregon coast. It’s also a fun opportunity to connect with other teens that share similar interests.”

The Youth Volunteer Program reaches beyond the Aquarium’s exhibits, with youth participating in regional public events such as DaVinci Days and exploring coastal natural areas like tide pools.

Students that participate may have the opportunity to receive a biology college credit at Oregon Coast Community College upon completing 48 hours of training and 60 hours of volunteer service.

The Aquarium President/CEO, Carrie Lewis, said this program is important because, “It provides local youth the opportunity to develop valuable life skills while immersing themselves in marine science. We are thrilled that we can provide these unique educational opportunities for the future leaders of our community.”

The Oregon Coast Aquarium encourages students, from ages 14 to 18, interested in the program to email or call 541-867-3474 to learn more and sign up for the fall program. The Aquarium is open every day this summer from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information, visit
