Ocean Art Classes for Kids

September 27, 2011

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is offering two art classes created for older kids and teens, taught by Newport artist Ron Houchens. The classes will help support the Aquarium’s Oceanscape Network, an online resource currently under development, which will connect kids and teenagers with the ocean. The Network will feature Houchens’ colorful depictions of fish, octopuses, lighthouses and sharks.

“This is an exciting opportunity for young people to try their hand at art with Ron’s instruction and encouragement,” said Marsh Myers, Aquarium Education Manager. “His unique style is especially appealing to young people.” Myers said the purpose behind the Oceanscape Network project is to connect kids to the coast and the oceans. “These art classes will give the public a taste of what we envision for Oceanscape in the years ahead – more opportunities for kids to connect with nature in a variety of ways.”
