Aquarium Presents Fisherpoets On The Edge

December 17, 2009

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is presenting FisherPoets On The Edge, a three-day celebration of poetry, storytelling and songs of the sea on a Martin Luther King Jr., holiday weekend, Jan. 16 through 18. The main event is Saturday, January 16, from 7 to 10 pm at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The evening will feature the popular fisher poets reviewed in last March's New York Times article, which said, "Even a bad day of fishing, it seems, can produce a decent rhyme."

Authors Jon Broderick, Jay Speakman, Geno Leech, Dave Densmore, Clem Starck, Moe Bowstern and Gene "Red Hawk" Davenport of the Lakota tribe will share poems, stories and songs. Fisherpoet singer-songwriters James and Julz Kasner will begin the show with a performance in the Aquarium lobby.

Visitors can stroll around and enjoy the Aquarium as food and libations are served by Local Ocean Café, a leader in sustainable seafoods, in the lobby, restaurant and in the Rocky Shores Gallery of the Aquarium. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door, available through the website and at the Aquarium.

The City of Newport hopes to inspire the imaginations of fisher poets and fans to visit the coastal community during the festival. “We are thrilled to be hosting the main event here,” said Cindy Hanson, Aquarium Public Relations Manager. “This is a perfect collaboration and what better place to hold it than alongside the shimmering exhibits of the Aquarium, where many of the animals and fish that inspire us are swimming nearby in our displays?” Hanson said the Fisherpoets Gathering in Astoria is a separate event, held in February. “The organizers of that event wanted to try one in Newport, and we said, ‘why not?’ It will be somewhat different from Astoria’s event - unique to Newport.”

The three day event begins Saturday, Jan. 16, with films from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Newport Public Library with free admission, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and popcorn. The main event at the Oregon Coast Aquarium is Saturday evening from 7 to 10 pm. Sunday’s event features an Open Mic and Hearty Brunch Buffet by Café Mundo at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club. The final day features a fisher poetry writing workshop, “Fishing For Poetry,” sponsored by Sitka Center will be taught by Clem Starck, an award-winning poet featured on Saturday night.
