The Annual COASTALearning Symposium (previously the Ocean Literacy Symposium) is pleased to announce that the 2013 Symposium will be held in Newport, Oregon, on October 10 and 11, 2013.

Program Description

Exploring natural places is not only appealing to students but also brings new opportunities for hands-on experience and learning across subjects. Engage students in writing about their observations at the beach, discussing the factors that effect forest management decisions and collecting data on invasive species distribution. These experiences enhance students' understanding of subject area content while giving them opportunities to apply skills to real world scenarios and issues.

The COASTALearning Symposium is an opportunity for K-12 educators, informal educators, higher education and others to come together to share and refine their skills for using the ocean and forest as a context for learning across grades and subjects. With the landscape of K-12 education shifting with wave after wave of national, state and local initiatives and mandates, this is an opportunity to learn engaging ways to move with the shifting sands.
